Red Orb News FAQ
Thinking about joining?
- Why should I join Red Orb News?
- Because we are the best newsgroup provider - period. We aren't just another run-of-the-mill ISP - we were born and raised with the newsgroups and crave technology. We also deeply understand the culture - it's something we live and breathe every day. Combine that with our incredibly low pricing, and it's a no brainer.
- How do I sign up for a Red Orb News account?
- You can navigate to our pricing page using the link at the top of this page. Or just click here!
- What account is best for me?
- That depends on how often you plan to use the newsgroups. If you're new and unsure if you will enjoy the newsgroups, try the 3 gig plan. If you know you're going to use more, consider the larger gigabyte plans.
- What card payment methods do you accept?
- We accept any card with a Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express logo on it.
- Do you accept foreign currencies?
- As long as the funds are payable with a card that has the Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express logo, then yes!
- Is it safe to make credit card purchases on your site?
- Absolutely. Your credit card information is encrypted and protected and stored in our credit card processors secure vault. That means that we neve storing your credit card information ourselves and your information is completely safe. We are PCI compliant and SSL secured. We go to great lengths to make sure you can feel safe making purchases on our site.
Welcome aboard, let's talk about account management.
- What happens after I sign up for an account?
- You will receive a welcome message from us via email and our web site after the purchase. This message contains three key pieces of information: 1) the news server address, 2) your username, and 3) your password. This account information must be entered into your news reader to connect to our service.
- What if I didn't receive my welcome email?
- Please check your spam folder the message. Also, set your spam filter and make sure that emails from redorbnews.com can come through. If you need to have a duplicate welcome email sent, please email helpdesk@redorbnews.com from the email address you signed up with and we'll be able to help you. Our helpdesk operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and most email inquiries are answered in about 15 minutes, usually quicker!
- What if I have lost my username.
- Go to our username and password recovery page to retrieve it.
- What if I have lost my password too!
- Today isn't your day! Go to our username and password recovery page to retrieve it.
- How do I cancel my account?
- You can easily cancel any account on your control panel once you have logged in. When you cancel your account, it will remain active until the end of the current billing cycle. Once the billing cycle ends, your account will no longer be billed or be active. Once your account is closed, you can always re-activate it.
Billing Questions
- How often am I billed?
- Red Orb News accounts are billed every 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, the payment method (credit card, etc.) you have on file with us will be billed. Our accounting cycle is based on Mountain Standard Time (MST). If you cancel on the 29th day at 11:59 MST, you will not be billed for the next month (30 days).
- What is the Auto Recycle option?
- Red Orb News offers several block accounts, each one with a certain transfer limit per billing cycle. Occasionally, you may find that before thirty (30) days is over, you are about to reach your limit. In anticipation of this, you may wish to enable the auto recycle option on your account. The auto recycle option replenishes your block account (recycle) whenever you run out of gigabytes. Once your account is recycled, your account will be charged and a new billing cycle will begin on the day of purchase.
Common Problems
- I keep receiving this error, "Too many Connections". What's up?
- Each news reader allows you to set a certain amount of connections between your computer and our server. Every account we offer has a limit - either 10 or 20. Please check the amount of connections your account plan permits, and configure your news reader accordingly. If you continue to have problems, login to your account and contact our 24/7 customer support, they'll be glad to help you.
- I am receiving a "502 Authentication" error. What's the deal?
- Most likely you have entered your username and password incorrectly. Please verify your username and password, and make sure it's entered correctly into your news reader. Also make sure your credit card hasn't expired, or that you've exceeded your monthly transfer limit (block plans). You can find this information in your account management page.
- I just changed my password and can't log in, what's up?
- It may take up to 15 minutes for your information to process on our servers on rare occasions. Please wait a bit and try again.
Exploring the Newsgroups
- Can I share my account with my buddies?
- No, we only permit a single account to be used by a single user. If we determine an abuse of an account such as account sharing, we will promptly take appropriate action.
- What is a news reader?
- A news reader is a program that's designed to access and connect to the newsgroups.
If you're a Mac, you can use these fine products: NZB Vortex and SABnzbd+.
If you're a PC, you can try these news readers: altbinz, Grabit, Unzbin, or SABnzbd+.
For Linux users, SABnzbd+ will work for you too! - What is the news server address?
- The standard news server address for North American users is: news.redorbnews.com. For European users: eu.redorbnews.com.

If you use the secure (SSL) server, you will also need to configure your news reader so it uses port 563. - Hey, I just logged into the control panel, where are the newsgroups?!
