Duke Pulls News Server That Started It All
May 24, 2010
It's been a while since we've blogged! Sorry to keep you waiting for so long, but we haven't forgotten about you ;)

So sure, you're probably wondering what the next big thing from RON will be. Before we get to that, did you read about Duke University shutting down their news server?

Not a Duke student you say? Well that's OK, but you should still know the significance of this day.

About 31 years ago, two Duke students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis conceived the ideas that would become Usenet. 1979 is considered the birth year of this phenomenon.

Today, Usenet and the newsgroups are still a big part of the Internet. But Duke's news server is about to have the plug pulled, marking the end of a long history.

The reason for pulling their server is much like most other ISPs: high cost and low usage. It's unfortunate, but if that is truly the case, then let Internet history be Internet history - the server may be gone but not the memories!
